I came. I saw. I ate.
Move over The Borough in London and La Boqueria in Barcelona, our very own Jozi is serving up her own feast of international flavour with the Jozi Food Market.
Nothing gets me more excited than good food, and that’s exactly what the Jozi Food Market has dished up since it’s opening in 2009. It certainly delivers on its promise to bring Joburger’s the very best of what our beloved Egoli has to offer, and by the sounds of it, there’s no stopping them now.
From families, to lovebirds on a weekend stroll, even pooches with owners in tow, they come from far and wide, to check out the one thing Jozi was missing for so long, an authentic gastronome’s wonderland to rival all others out there. Judging by the nosh that people schlep out of there every weekend, I reckon its safe to assume: Mission Accomplished!
The market was the brainchild of three lovely ‘mommies-to-be’ (who met at their weekly book club) and who have made their home away from home in The Parktown Quarter on 7th Ave every Saturday. Entrance, would you believe it is absolutely free? That’s right, nix, nada, nothing! The music pumps, there are delicious treats at every turn and the place is packed. In all, everything you would expect from a food market experience.
Buy yourself a brand spanking new shopping bag at the entrance if you wish, and you’re ready to go. From wine to cupcakes and tarts, fresh fruits, veggies, cheeses and breads, there’s something to tantalize everyone’s taste buds. I even picked up some organic ice cream on my way out. Add to that amazing pesto’s and olive oils, as well as curries, fresh flowers and cakes that mysteriously found their way into my shopping bag.
Now if you haven’t been yet, shame on you. But don’t fret. This situation can be fixed. You have plenty time to get down there. I’ll be there, sampling even more delicious treats and I hope to see you there too.
The Jozi Food Market is held every Saturday from 8.30am to 1.30pm. Find them at 7th Ave Parktown Quarter, Parktown (they call the parking area down from Moema’s and Woolies home). For more info you can E-mail Kaitlin at info@jozifoodmarket.co.za
