Play us a song Mr Piano Man...
Bach, Beethoven and Motzart – legendary composers right? You must be thinking (a) they are way out of your generation gap, and well, (b) our grandparents were merely a distant thought when these virtuosos’ roamed the streets. Correct on the one hand, but so wrong on the other! The incredible skill that is ‘piano playing’ has been revived once again, this time played to perfection by 2 blokes who ooze talent and personality and if we’re being honest they make the whole affair look and sound just plain cool.
The hysterical two-man piano show seen by over 100 000 people in South Africa alone is back. A Handful of Keys created by musical legend Ian von Memerty and accomplished musician Bryan Schimmel began in 1994 and has since played to packed houses locally and internationally, in London and Australia. Since its early beginnings this sensational piece of theatre has been watched by a staggering 200 000 people. No matter where it’s playing, people just gravitate to it.
The two star’s of this scintillating production are Jonathan Roxmouth, who has just finished setting the local and international stages alight in Grease playing Danny, and Roelof Colyn, accomplished musical director on the South African entertainment scene. This pairing, since 2008, has definitely created musical magic and has relit the fire that A Handful of Keys seems to eternally burn. Their energy is next to none, their comedic timing – impeccable, and their love of the piano and the story they are telling is enthralling. From the classical composers who gave the piano its roots, to the men and women of today who keep those ivories constant; artists such as Elton John, Billy Joel and Alicia Keys. A RAVE favourite was the ’12 minute History of Broadway’, and the always special ‘Music was my first love’ by John Miles.
A Handful of Keys, though it doesn’t have a cast of 40 people, proves that less is definitely more. Its an intimate and hilarious look back to where ‘the music really began’, and proves our point once more, that when it comes to talent on our stages we really do have it all. See this gem for yourselves, Jonathan Roxmouth and Roelof Colyn will truly get you ‘all in the mood for a melody’ and will have you begging for more…and more…and more.
